Perimeter of a square is 4a where a is the side length. The mean is the sum of the perimeters divided by 3.

If b and c are the side lengths of the other two closets, then 4a+4b+4c=3×36=108.

So a+b+c=108/4=27 and the mean side length is 27/3=9ft.
