I know the quadratic formula and believe I applied it correctly with the equation given above, but the result produced a square root of a negative number.  Therefore, I might have written the equation incorrectly.  Again, the equation reads: 6  times x squared -7x +8=0.

The equation may have been wrongly written because the quadratic formula does produce a negative discriminant, so the solution is complex. Perhaps it should have been 6x²-7x+2=0 which factorises into:

(3x-2)(2x-1)=0 with zeroes x=⅔ and ½; or 6x²-7x+1=(6x-1)(x-1).
