Add the equations together to eliminate x:

5y+2y=8-1, so 7y=7 and y=1 when we divide both sides by 7.

Now put y=1 into either equation:

-x+2=-1, 2=x-1, 3=x, so x=3 and y=1 is the solution. Check by putting these values into each equation:

3+5=8, true; -3+2=-1, true. So the solution is confirmed to be true.
