If the 300 meter oval track has 6 lanes, but one of the straightaways is 10 lanes wide and 140 meters long, how many square feet is the entire track surface?
in Geometry Answers by

How does the 10-lane straightway merge to 6 lanes? Where do the other 4 lanes go? Is it the straightway on both sides of the oval or just on one side? A diagram would help. Are all the lanes the same width, whether 10 or 6?

If s=140m and the track length is 300m, then 280+πd=300 making d=20/π=6.366m approx. That would imply a very tight curve in the semicircular sections. The calculation doesn’t need the length of the straightway because the semicircular diameters are related to the straightway length by the track length 300m. The terms involving s and d cancel out when calculating the track area.
