Job decides to fund the education of three students; A,B and C  with an amount of $1220 for a year. They decide to give A 120% of the amount paid to B and 85% of the amount C is paid. How much will A receive?

If A, B, C are the amounts paid then:

A=1.2B=0.85C.

So B=A/1.2 and C=A/0.85.

Total: A+A/1.2+A/0.85=1220.

A(1+1/1.2+1/0.85)=1220.

Multiply both sides by 1.2×0.85=1.02:

A(1.02+0.85+1.2)=1244.4,

3.07A=1244.4,

A=1244.4/3.07=$405.34 approx.
