y=-8x-37, x+3y=4

Substitute either equation into the other.  Since y is given first, let's substitute what they gave for y (-8x-37) into the second equation like this:

x+3(y)=4

x+3(-8x-37)=4

x+ -24x -(3)(37) =4

-23x - 111 =4

-x  = (4 + 111) / 23

x  = 5
