1) 2x - 9y = 14

2) 6x - y = 42  or  6x - 42 = y

substitute eq(2) into eq(1):

2x - 9(6x - 42) = 14

2x - 54x + 378 = 14

-52x = -364

x = -364/-52 = 7

using eq(2):

y = 6(7) - 42 = 0

check using eq(1):

2(7) - 9(0) = 14

14 = 14

x = 7, y = 0
