Algebraic long division:

         x - 2          (quotient)

x+5 ) x2+3x-12 (dividend)

         x2+5x (subtract x times from x2+3x)

             -2x-12 (remainder -2x; now attach the constant -12)

             -2x-10 (subtract -2 times x+5)

                   -2 (remainder)

ANSWER (x2+3x-12)/(x+5) = x-2 remainder -2.
