Can't figure out homework question for my daughter. Am I over thinking this??

If a and b are the numbers, a-b=3, so b=a-3, and ab=40, so a(a-3)=40. a^2-3a-40=0 factorises: (a+5)(a-8)=0. a=-5 or 8, making b=-8 or 5. The two numbers are -5 and -8, or 5 and 8.
