For y=1/(x+4)-1, the domain is the range of valid values for x.

y is not defined (or is indefinite, "infinity") when x=-4. This is the only value of x which is invalid, so the domain is x<>-4, which can also be expressed as open intervals: (-infinity,-4), (-4,infinity).
