g(x)=(1/4)(x+2)^2-10 because the parent function f(x) is an origin-based parabola. (h,k) is the vertex and a occupies the position as in g(x)-k=a(x-h)^2. g(x) can also be written: x^2/4+x+1-10 or x^2/4+x-9.
