A recipe that makes 8 pints of coleslaw uses 2 heads of cabbage. How many pints of coleslaw can be made from 5 heads of cabbage.

2 = 5

8    x

Solve for x.  Use cross product.  Multiply the top of the left side by the bottom of the right side and the bottom of the left side by the top of the right side.

2x = 8 * 5   simplify

2x = 40       divide both sides by 2

2x = 40

 2      2       simplify

x = 20
