-6(2x+3)=42

-12x+(-18)=42

+18            +18

     -12x=60

      -12  -12

         x=-5

distribute:

-12x - 18 = 42

add 18 to both sides:

-12x = 60

divide both sides by -12:

x = 60/-12 = -5
