Catherine paid $22 for a sweater on sale.  It was reduced by $13.  What was the original price?

X is the original price which was reduced by thirteen dollars for a sale price of twenty-two.

X -$13 = $22

Add $13 to both sides of the equation to get the X by itself and you'll know the original price.
