first distribute the 2

2(-w-8) =  -2w-16

-2w-16+9 > -17 (pretend for a min that the > is an equal sign)

-2w-16+9=-17

combin like terms

-2w-7=-17

add 7 to both sides

-2w=-10

divide -2 on both sides

w=5

replace the = with >

w>5
